Skimming Stones by Laura Tulloch
Skimming Stones is my creative studio — a space shaped by my love of interiors, nature and quiet, thoughtful making.
I launched Skimming Stones in 2018, originally as a fabric and surface pattern design brand. At the time, I was creating hand-drawn interior textiles designed to bring a sense of calm and balance into the home. I’ve always believed that home should feel like a sanctuary — somewhere to slow down and soften after a long day — and that idea has remained at the heart of everything I create.
Before starting Skimming Stones, I worked in publishing. After taking a career break to raise my young family, creativity gradually found its way back into my life. I explored a number of creative paths before focusing on surface pattern design, completing several courses and eventually opening my online shop. Running my own creative studio had long been a quiet ambition, and Skimming Stones grew naturally from that time.
My early fabric collections were all hand drawn and inspired by nature, family holidays and the landscapes around where I live. Often described as calm and understated, the designs were created in soft, considered colour palettes that could be layered easily within interior spaces. Those collections laid the foundations of the brand and continue to influence my work today.
More recently, my creative practice has gently shifted. I now focus primarily on creating original watercolour paintings, working in a slower, more intuitive way. Painting allows me to explore colour, texture and movement more freely, while still creating artwork that feels calm and grounding. Each piece is one of a kind, created with interiors in mind — art to live with, rather than simply look at.
The name Skimming Stones comes from my childhood in Edinburgh, from memories of skimming stones across St Margaret’s Loch. Water has always been where I feel most at ease, whether by a loch, river or the sea, and that sense of stillness continues to run through my work.
Today, Skimming Stones is first and foremost an art-led studio, with my focus on original artwork for interiors. Looking ahead, I plan to grow the brand into a considered collection of art, textiles and wallpaper, all connected by the same calm, nature-inspired aesthetic.
Skimming Stones is an ongoing creative journey — evolving slowly and intentionally — rooted in the idea of creating work that brings a sense of quiet beauty and ease into the home.
